July 19, 2022

On June 24th, 2022, after several weeks of speculation, the U.S. Supreme Court voted to overturn Roe V Wade, effectively eliminating the right to abortion, enshrined in the constitution for nearly fifty years. This is happening at a time when 26 states (more than half the total number of states in the U.S.) have already severely curtailed access to abortion and now will effectively re-criminalize abortion, potentially pushing many women, girls, and anyone with the capacity for pregnancy into financial fallouts, especially Black, Indigenous, and people of color, and overwhelm an already crowded care system (healthcare, day care, foster care, etc.)

It is difficult to accept that our government has once again chosen to endanger one of the most pressing health and human rights issues; the reproductive rights of women, girls, and anyone with the capacity for pregnancy. As we saw with the global gag rule, decisions like these have ripple effects across the world. Not only does it impact U.S. funding for essential healthcare programming in other countries, it emboldens anti-choice groups and other governments to further restrict reproductive rights, sending the message that already established laws can be challenged. India, Bangladesh, and Malawi are among the countries already reporting pushback on sexual and reproductive health and rights – as part of the wider roll back against women, girls, and trans rights and gender equality.

That’s why we are supporting grassroots organizations who are determined to ensure that everyone, everywhere has access to sexual and reproductive healthcare through the use of abortion funds (independent, grassroots organizations developed to fund and support access to abortions). Abortion funds help to remove obstacles people may face when they need to access abortion services. Even before the Supreme Court overturned Roe V Wade, abortion funds were funding abortion access (procedures and pills), transportation and accommodation for anyone who needed to travel for a procedure, as well as other needs voiced by people. With rights rolled back (or soon to be) in more than 26 states, abortion funds are essential, now more than ever, to protect the right to choose. But they can’t do it without you!

We support the demands of abortion funds and encourage our supporters to uplift and donate to the ongoing efforts demanding reproductive justice, rights, access, and choice for millions across the United States.

We also encourage you to share your story or personalized account with us so that during our Reproductive Justice Week of Action (July 25th – 29th) we can amplify the experiences of women, girls, and anyone with the capacity for pregnancy and take targeted action to reinforce the importance of reproductive justice while working to dispel any stigma or hate around the reasons people have an abortion, none of which are wrong. Please share your story here (you can do so anonymously!)
