Commenting on the House vote to pass the White House rescission package, ActionAid UA’s Senior Policy Analyst Kelly Stone, said:
“By accepting the Trump administration’s rescissions request, House Republicans have just signed up to own the cruel and deadly DOGE-driven destruction of USAID and U.S. foreign assistance – and the administration’s unconstitutional power grab.
They claim foreign assistance doesn’t align with U.S. interests or, in some cases, that it is simply ‘inefficient.’ U.S. foreign aid isn’t perfect, but entirely cutting off food and medication, closing clinics, and crippling disaster aid is not the answer. The Trump administration did it this way because they wanted chaos and cruelty, and to seize the Congressional power of the purse. People are dying, we are in the midst of a Constitutional crisis, and House Republicans have just given their official stamp of approval.
The Senate must not legitimize this horrifying decision by approving it after the fact.”
