ActionAid USA welcomes the introduction of a resolution for a Green New Deal by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) and Sen. Ed Markey (D-Mass.) today. ActionAid USA Director of Policy and Campaigns Brandon Wu said:

“The Green New Deal being proposed by Rep. Ocasio-Cortez and Sen. Markey is a major step forward towards the kind of comprehensive policy we need in order to address the climate crisis in a just and equitable way. We fully support the Green New Deal’s aim to achieve a zero-emissions economy while supporting farmers and workers and ensuring justice for historically marginalized communities.

“Climate change is a global problem that requires unprecedented international cooperation to resolve. U.S. climate policy must recognize the outsized role our country has played in causing the climate crisis and commit us to doing our fair share of global climate action. That includes providing finance and technology to poorer countries that have done little to cause the crisis and already suffering from its impacts.

“The resolution’s language on ‘promoting the international exchange of technology, expertise, products, funding, and services, with the aim of making the United States the international leader on climate action, and to help other countries achieve a Green New Deal’ is a good start. We look forward to working with Green New Deal proponents to strengthen these international aspects of the proposal.”
