As tensions and violence escalate along the border, ActionAid Cambodia and local partners are working to evacuate and support communities affected by the conflict.
Mr Yinh Ya, Executive Director of the Community Translation Organisation, a long-standing partner of ActionAid Cambodia, said:
“People have been forced to flee their homes and are now sheltering in temporary safe spaces. This displacement has disrupted livelihoods, forced school closures, and created widespread fear and insecurity.
As in any crisis, the most marginalised groups, including women, children, older people, persons with disabilities and ethnic minorities, are facing the gravest risks. They are experiencing job losses, hunger, trauma, and a lack of safe shelter. Many are unable to access essential services due to existing social barriers and discriminatory norms.
Urgent needs include food supplies such as water tanks, rice, instant noodles, canned fish and cooking ingredients, as well as hygiene materials, medicine, and shelter equipment like tents. There has been some local government support, particularly mobile toilets, but with the number of displaced people growing, much more is still needed. Access to safe drinking water and clean water storage is especially critical.”
Chantara Kimsan, Interim Country Director of ActionAid Cambodia, added:
“ActionAid Cambodia is responding on the ground in partnership with local organisations. The country is currently in its monsoon season, and the continuous rainfall is worsening living conditions, particularly for children. Exposure to mosquitoes has also increased, as many families are sheltering in outdoor tents near forested areas.
We are continuing to gather information on displacement figures, casualties, and damage to essential infrastructure in preparation for the next phase of support. We urge all parties to prioritise the safety of civilians and to commit to an urgent, peaceful resolution to this conflict.
