The climate crisis and rising cost of living means that farmers who have done everything to keep their farms up and running are at risk of having their life’s work taken away from them. You can help ActionAid support people to sustain the livelihoods they’ve worked so hard to create.
Twin crises – a cost of living crisis and a climate crisis – are being felt worldwide.
Independently, these crises can lead to devastating effects like skyrocketing prices for essential items and catastrophic climate events that threaten ways of life. When put together, these crises create a whole host of disproportionate implications for women and girls.

ActionAid’s research shows that local communities are adopting various strategies to survive in the face of these crises. These strategies can have unintended harmful outcomes, like a greater likelihood of child marriage, a higher school dropout rate, and families taking on considerable debt. We work with people like Rina to create short-term and long-term solutions to reduce these negative impacts.
Support Communities on the Frontlines of Crisis.
Rina is a mother and farmer living in the Bangladesh countryside. As one of the most climate-vulnerable countries, Bangladesh has been hit by frequent and severe flooding events and storms over the past few years. Saltwater floods have damaged Rina’s staple rice, peanut, and sweet potato crops. Without crops to sell and without savings to spend on basic items, which have become more and more expensive, Rina and her family are put in an impossible situation.

Through agroecology training by ActionAid, Rina has been able to use irrigation to collect fresh water. As a result, she can now grow crops well again and provide for her family.
“Our situation has improved a lot. Before, everything would be submerged in water. We tried to cultivate rice but couldn’t. Now, by the agroecology trainings of ActionAid, I’ve learned many things. It’s helped us a lot.”
Watch Rina’s story to learn more about how she has been working with ActionAid to overcome the negative impacts of these twin crises.
Despite the impacts of price rises and the climate crisis, Rina shared that she and her community would still like to continue farming.
This is the kind of decision-making power that ActionAid strives to facilitate: the power for Rina and her community to continue to thrive on their own terms and not on the terms created by systems that are out of their control.
