Commenting on Bill Gates’ announcement that the Gates Foundation will begin a 20-year wind-down, Meredith Slater, Director of Development for ActionAid USA, said:

“ActionAid has worked with the Gates Foundation for over a decade on a range of initiatives that support smallholder farmers, advance gender equity, and address critical issues globally. While we have occasionally “agreed to disagree” on certain matters, the collaboration has been crucial in enabling ActionAid to implement transformative programs.

At a time when our sector is facing financial turmoil, with government cuts to aid funding and many funders refusing to tap into their endowments—preferring instead to continue on in perpetuity rather than address the crises of today—the Gates Foundation’s decision to invest now, rather than in the future, is a step in the right direction. We urge other funders to follow this example. Now is the time for action; the need has never been greater.”
