ActionAid strongly condemns the United States’ recent bombardment of Venezuela and the capture of Venezuelan president Nicolas Maduro and his wife, which constitutes a serious violation of international law and the core principles of the United Nations Charter.
Brandon Wu, Director of Policy and Campaigns at ActionAid USA, says:
“While the situation in Venezuela remains deeply concerning, the use of unilateral military force is not a solution. Such actions undermine international norms, escalate instability, and worsen human suffering.
Conflict is on the rise; one in six people were exposed to conflict in 2025. At a time when violence is spreading, the erosion of a rules-based international order poses a grave threat to global peace. Under the current administration, the United States has openly and repeatedly flouted the rule of law, including the murder of civilians in international waters and illegal unilateral bombings of Nigeria, Iran, Syria, Yemen, Somalia, and now Venezuela.
ActionAid calls on the United States and all governments to uphold international law and recommit to multilateral approaches that are rooted in diplomacy, accountability and a commitment to human rights. As historic allies, The European Union must take principled and meaningful diplomatic action and call to stop violations of international law.
ActionAid also calls on the United Nations Security Council to convene urgently to address the situation and take immediate steps to uphold the UN Charter and prevent further escalation.
The world does not need more violence; it needs renewed commitment to upholding international law, which is essential to protect civilians and prevent further conflict.”
