As the U.S. Veto Stalls UN Resolution for Gaza, ActionAid calls for Humanitarian Action and Accountability

OCTOBER 18 – Today, the United States vetoed a UN Security Council resolution condemning violence against civilians and urging humanitarian aid to Gaza. This is an unacceptable obstruction of justice. There is no time to wait while people continue to suffer atrocities.

While we appreciate the reported U.S. efforts to open a humanitarian corridor and provide $100 million of assistance to Palestinians in Gaza, this is contradicted by U.S. actions like the UN veto, a lack of effort to secure a ceasefire, and President Biden’s pledge to ask Congress for billions in additional military aid to Israel.

We call on President Biden to use the influence of his office and the historical role of the U.S. in the region to not only open a humanitarian corridor but also call for a ceasefire and demand accountability for all violations of international humanitarian law.
