The new COP29 president has his work cut out – deliver the cash needed for a fossil fuel phase-out

Reacting to the appointment of Mukhtar Babayev as the COP29 president, ActionAid International’s Global Lead on Climate Justice, Teresa Anderson said:

“The role of any COP president is to steer world leaders in the right direction. Babayev’s priority, starting today, must be to ensure that the world’s growing appetite for climate action is matched by the necessary funding. COP29 needs to deliver the finance desperately needed to make the transition from fossil fuel to renewable energy.

For Global South countries, who continue to bear the brunt of a crisis they have done little to cause, COP29 must unlock the funds they need to not only make the transition to renewable energy but also help them cope with severe climate impacts.”
