Education and HIV & AIDS
Education and HIV & AIDS
Schools throughout southern and eastern Africa are struggling to survive the impacts of high rate of HIV & AIDS. The impacts of the disease on education has been recognized for less than a decade and the plight of AIDS orphans, children living with HIV & AIDS and children acting as caregivers – and the role of education in halting the spread of the disease - can no longer be ignored.
ActionAid works with governments at the national and local level to incorporate HIV & AIDS into the planning process. We work to include information about HIV & AIDS in the curriculum and also work to include orphans, children living with the disease and child caregivers into schools.
Education can help stem the epidemic
HIV & AIDS does not have a cure so prevention is essential. ActionAid promotes awareness of the disease and safe behaviors. We also encourage educators to serve as leaders for HIV & AIDS initiatives to help integrate these initiatives into the community already built around the school.
