A widely prescribed, yet misguided, solution to meeting the world’s future food needs, is to simply produce more food. However this report, Rising to the Challenge: Changing Course to Feed the World in 2050, based on a review of recent economic modeling studies by researchers at Tufts University’s Global Development and Environment Institute, finds that calls to double food production by 2050 to feed an estimated population of 9 billion are based on flawed forecasts and misleading characterizations of recent research.

Meanwhile, the impact of climate change and biofuels expansion on future food security and the sustainability of large-scale, fossil fuel-based agriculture is vastly underexplored.
