Bequests

A bequest is a gift of cash, property or other asset designated in a donor’s will or living trust for distribution to ActionAid. Bequests may designate an exact dollar amount in cash, name specific securities, identify particular tangible property(ies), or designate a percentage of the residual of the estate. Donors and supporters of AAI USA will be encouraged to make bequests to support our work in their wills and through trusts. Donors will be advised to name ActionAid International in order to clearly indicate their intent. Bequests made by donors may also establish testamentary charitable remainder trust or unitrusts for the benefit of ActionAid. The bequest can be arranged to provide life income for a designated beneficiary or beneficiaries. If such a gift is made by will, the principal will pass to ActionAid only after the death of the life income beneficiary(ies).

Retirement Plan Beneficiary Designations

Donors may designate ActionAid as the beneficiary of their retirement plans, including Individual Retirement Accountrs and qualified profit-sharing plans. ActionAid may be named as primary, secondary or contingent beneficiary. Such designations will be recorded as gifts to ActionAid when they become irrevocable. When the funds will be paid at a future date, the present value of the expected payment(s) will be recorded as a gift at the time the designation becomes irrevocable. Gifts from retirement plans are established by registration of appropriate beneficiary designation with the donor’s retirement plan administrator.

Life Insurance and Life Insurance Beneficiary Designations

Donors may name ActionAid as the beneficiary or contingent beneficiary of their life insurance policies. Such designations will be recorded as gifts only when the designation becomes irrevocable. The value of the gift will be recorded at the present value of the amount of the anticipated payment.

Charitable Gift Annuities

ActionAid accepts charitable gift annuities. Gift annuity rates will be based on the current gift annuity rates as adopted by the American Council on Gift Annuities. The minimum gift for funding an annuity shall be $100,000 and minimum age for life income beneficiaries shall be 65, or 55 for deferred gift annuities. ActionAid will not accept real estate or tangible personal property to fund a gift annuity. All gift annuities will be reinsured through a reputable service provider.

Charitable Remainder Trusts

ActionAid will not accept charitable remainder trusts without the unanimous recommendation of the Executive Director and Executive Committee. In the event that AAI USA elects to accept a charitable remainder trust, ActionAid must have at least 10 percent beneficial interest in a trust with a minimum value of $50,000. AAI USA’s legal counsel must thoroughly review any proposed trusts. If a trusteeship is accepted, ActionAid may contract with a trust company to serve as our agent.

Charitable Lead Trusts

ActionAid will not accept charitable lead trusts without the unanimous recommendation of the Executive Director and Executive Committee. In the event that AAI USA elects to accept a charitable lead trust, AAI USA will not accept an appointment as trustee to the trust.
